Outpatient billing is usually more straightforward than inpatient billing because it generally involves fewer payer layers and does not usually require the same Medicare/private health fund split used for admitted private patients. Many established practices handle it internally. New doctors, solo specialists and small practices may not have dedicated billing staff, so DEVZ can manage the outpatient workflow alongside inpatient work.

Bulk billing in an outpatient setting

Private outpatient billing
If a specialist does not bulk bill, the doctor may set a fee above the Medicare benefit. The patient may then have an out-of-pocket cost equal to the difference between the fee and the Medicare benefit.
