What is inpatient medical billing?

Inpatient medical billing is the process of preparing and lodging claims for services delivered to a patient who has been formally admitted to hospital. It is fundamentally more complex than a standard rooms consultation. A single admission may generate several separate item numbers, involve more than one payer, and carry strict timing rules linked to the discharge date. Get any element wrong and the claim either stalls in a queue or comes back rejected.

Because the stakes are higher, inpatient billing rewards specialisation. A generalist billing service that also handles inpatient work alongside everything else is a different proposition to a service that only does inpatient work. The difference shows up in the numbers.

Why inpatient billing is different

Consider a typical private hospital admission. The specialist may perform a procedure, provide attendances across several days, and order services that attract their own item numbers. Medicare pays a benefit, the private health fund pays a benefit under its no-gap or known-gap arrangement, and the two must reconcile. If the wrong MBS item number is used, or a health fund registration is missing, or the claim is lodged late, the practitioner loses money that was legitimately earned.

Our inpatient billing process

We keep the process simple on your end and carry the complexity ourselves:

• Send billing details. Admission and treatment details reach us in whatever format works for you or your practice.
• Item number coding. We assign the correct MBS item numbers for the episode, including multiple items where applicable.
• Secure lodgement. Claims are submitted through Medicare-compliant systems to Medicare and the relevant health fund.
• Assessment and follow-up. We track each claim, chase anything outstanding, and correct and resubmit rejections.
• Paid directly to you. Funds land in your own account. You receive one monthly invoice for the 3.5% fee.
