MBS item 32219: positive FOBT colonoscopy
From 1 July 2026, MBS item 32219 was introduced for colonoscopy following a positive faecal occult blood test undertaken for screening purposes. Item 32222 was amended to remove those FOBT services.

What practices should check

Billing workflow
- Confirm the procedure and indication from the clinical record.
- Check the item descriptor current on the date of service.
- Confirm patient, provider and location details.
- Lodge through the appropriate Medicare and health fund pathway.
- Review any return code or rejection and correct it promptly.
